He's come a long way and ranks regularly in not only the people's choice but the DJ's choice of DJ with the ability to cross genres yet not lose his credibility. We spoke to Space resident and Harlem Records boss Steve Lawler.....
What have you been up to recently?
Buying a new home, making music, playing music and having lots of fun!
Describe your musical and djing style.
Dirty, sexy, drug fuelled, chunky house for the masses!!!
How did you get involved in music?
Like everyone else, heard acid house for the first time and have been hooked ever since.
How would you say your musical style has progressed since you first got involved in music?
It's progressed as music has progressed over the years, and I think as you get more experienced and grow up in the scene, you look for something more! Something that has all the elements for a dancefloor but also that little bit extra.
Who was the very first dj you ever saw in a club?
I have no idea who it would have been, in those days DJ's were in the background playing the music and controlling the party. I just knew it was great music and an experience that I had not had before.
Who was the last dj you heard who you really liked?
DJ Ralph, from Italy
What's the weirdest/funniest moment you've ever encountered clubwise?
Jesus, there's so many and unfortunately I can't talk about them in the press, you know how it is ;)
Have you done anything embarrassing you'd like to share with us?
Ah Ah! Next question.
Do you have a club which you really like playing at?
Yes, many of the clubs that I play at more than once I really enjoy, there are of course favourites, Shindig in Newcastle. Clubland in Buena Saires, Argentina. Tennax in Florence, Italy. Space in Ibiza. Ooh there's lots!
How much time do you spend on music a week?
All my time pretty much, either working on new tracks/remixes, doing re-edits, signing new material for my label and wading through hundreds of records/CDs I get every week.
How many records are there in your collection?
Between 20 to 25,000
What are your biggest tunes in your record box at the moment?
My new signle - Lost. He, he, he.
Before being a full time dj, what were your last 2 jobs?
Didn't have any.
What would you love to do jobwise if you weren't a dj?
What are your favourite labels?
Don't really have favourite labels, as they're not really consistent, one release I might like and the next I might hate.
What one thing can't you stand about clubland?
Every now and again, and a minority (thank god) you get some complete pissed up knobhead standing in front of the DJ booth shouting "Come on play harder!" and they're basically in the wrong club, and they are listening to the wrong DJ and have no idea whatsoever! I think I share that thought with a lot of people.
What's your favourite holiday destination?
How do you like to unwind?
Feet up on the sofa, curtains drawn, smoke a joint and watcha good movie.
What are you going to be doing soon?
Lots of things, mainly bringing out lots of new music, I've finally got myself back in the studio on a regular basis.
